Class in 2 minutes: how to read a silver rate
- Know the purity. Silver 999 is 99.9% pure and is used for bars and coins. Jewellery and utensils are often 925 (sterling silver, 92.5% pure), so they are priced lower per gram before making charges.
- Know the unit. Silver is quoted per kilogram. Divide by 1,000 for one gram, or by 100 for 10 grams.
- Know what is included. The IBJA benchmark excludes 3% GST and making charges, so shops and coin sellers will charge more.
- Know why it moves. Silver follows global prices in dollars, the rupee's value and industrial demand from solar panels and electronics, so it often swings more than gold.
