Indian shares closed lower for a fourth straight session on Friday, but well off the day's lows. The Sensex ended at 73,123.83, down 125.56 points (0.17%), and the Nifty 50 at 22,600.00, down 87.65 points (0.39%), according to Business Standard and ChiniMandi. At 11 am the Nifty had been 1.06% lower at 22,448.15, so it recovered about 152 points from that level by the close.

The pain was in smaller companies. The Nifty Midcap 100 fell 2.21% and the Nifty Smallcap 100 2.94%, Business Standard reported. All sector indices ended lower, ChiniMandi reported: realty and consumer durables fell about 3% each, and energy, metal and PSU banks about 2%. Shriram Finance, Adani Ports, Adani Enterprises, Tata Steel and Jio Financial were the Nifty's biggest losers, while Eternal, Apollo Hospitals, Infosys, TCS and Maruti Suzuki were the top gainers.

Why: Brent crude stayed near $114 a barrel on Middle East supply worries, global tech shares were still weak after Thursday's 2.6% Nasdaq fall, and an early rebound ran into selling. IT shares rose ahead of Infosys's results this evening, which kept the Nifty's fall smaller than the damage in mid and small caps. India VIX, the volatility gauge, rose sharply during the day.

Results during the day: JSW Steel reported consolidated profit of ₹5,359 crore for July–September, up 14.1% from the April–June quarter, on revenue from operations of ₹54,486 crore, up 15% from the previous quarter, Business Standard reported (exchange filing not yet available to us). Hatsun Agro fell 10.14% to ₹964.10 at 2:31 pm after its operating margin narrowed, and BlueStone Jewellery fell 8.4% after reporting a ₹4.4 crore loss.

IPOs: Jio Platforms' IPO, closing today, was subscribed 9.81 times at 2:10 pm, with QIBs at 23.47 times, NIIs 11.97 times and retail investors 2.28 times, Business Standard reported. Today's four listings opened mixed, from Tonbo Imaging's 65.71% gain to Bonfiglioli Transmissions' flat start.

Key takeaway: the Nifty's 0.39% fall hides a much worse day for smaller stocks, down about 2–3%. When the index and your own portfolio tell different stories, look at mid and small caps.

Global impact

Weak global tech and high oil prices continue to set the tone for emerging markets.

Impact on India

Investors in small-cap and mid-cap funds saw a far worse day than the Nifty suggests; IT shares held up before Infosys's results.

Why it mattersOil near $114 and foreign selling keep pressure on the market, especially on smaller and oil-sensitive stocks.
