- Know the purity. 24 karat (also written 999) is 99.9% pure gold. It is used for coins and bars. Jewellery is usually 22 karat (916), which is 91.6% gold mixed with other metals so it is strong enough to wear. 18 karat (750) is 75% gold and is common in diamond jewellery. Less gold means a lower price per gram.
- Know the unit. Rates are quoted per 10 grams for gold and per kilogram for silver. Divide by 10 to get the price of one gram of gold.
- Know what is included. The benchmark rate from IBJA, the jewellers' association, does not include GST or making charges. That is why the shop price is always higher than the number on this page.
- Know why cities differ. Local jewellers' associations add their own margins and transport and local costs, so Chennai, Mumbai and Delhi can differ by a few hundred rupees.
